$8000.00 First time buyer TAX CREDIT
$6,500 Non-First time Buyer Credit

Revised for January 1st 2009 buyers have a credit of up to $8,000 with out any requirement to pay it back. You have to maintain the property as your primary residence for at least 3 years. Pre 2009 H.R. 3221 Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008 provides for a credit of up to $7,500 but must be paid back in 15 years.
If you have not owned a home in the past 3 years you qualify for the $8,000 TAX CREDIT 

Special provisions for Military and State Dept.

Members of the military and certain other federal employees serving outside the U.S. have an extra year to buy a principal residence in the U.S. and qualify for the credit. Thus, an eligible taxpayer must buy, or enter into a binding contract to buy, a principal residence on or before April 30, 2011.
